Description

Functional analyses are commonly used to determine the function of problem behavior. They involve the direct manipulation of various environmental variables to determine their influence on problem behavior in order to direct treatment development. Although research supports the use of functional analyses, they may not always be feasible in all settings (e.g., schools) due to limited resources, primarily access to controlled environments. The trial-based functional analysis (Bloom, Iwata, Fritz, Roscoe, & Carreau, 2011) was developed to allow teachers to participate in conducting functional analysis in their classrooms, with brief assessment trials embedded into ongoing activities. This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the trial-based functional analysis, exploring its strengths and weaknesses and identifying conditions under which it is appropriate for use. Participants will learn how to conduct trial-based functional analyses, and how to collect, graph and analyze data. Participants will view video clips of trial-based FAs and role-play different trial-types as well as practice data collection, graphing, and analysis skills. Participants will receive trial-based FA procedures description handouts as well as blank data sheets and graphs. It is recommended that participants have an intermediate knowledge level, and have some experience with functional analysis to receive maximum benefit from the workshop.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this event:
1. Participants will be able to describe the conditions under which a trial-based FA is and is not appropriate.
2. Participants will be able to conduct FA trials.
3. Participants will be able to collect, graph, and analyze trial-based FA data.
4. Participants will be able to discuss strategies for successfully using trial- based FA in school settings.

Sarah E. Bloom, Ph.D., BCBA-D earned her Masters and PhD with Dr. Brian Iwata at the University of Florida in 2008. She is an Associate Professor in the Applied Behavior Analysis program in the Department of Child and Family Studies at the University of South Florida (USF) and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (Doctoral). She supervises a research lab of Master’s and Doctoral students. Her current courses include: Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, Ethics for Behavior Analysts, Conceptual Foundations of Behavior Analysis, and Functional Analysis and Function-Based Approaches to Intervention. Prior to this position, she was a faculty member at Utah State University. She is a former President of the Utah Association for Behavior Analysis and is on the editorial board for the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. She is a guest reviewer at Behavior Analysis in Practice, Behavioral Interventions, The Behavior Analyst, Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Research in Developmental Disabilities, Journal of Behavioral Education, Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, Education and Treatment of Children, and Journal of Early Intervention. She has over 20 articles published or in press in peer-reviewed journals, including articles on cultural and linguistic diversity in behavior analysis. Her current research interests include assessment and treatment of problem behavior and improving access to behavior analysis for culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
