This workshop reviews current research in trial-based functional analysis, and examines conceptual, ethical, and procedural issues related to its use. Current research on training parents and other professionals to use trial-based functional analysis will be reviewed. Data analysis and a new approach that uses signal detection theory to identify thresholds for determination of function will be presented.

After attending this event:

 

1. Participants will be able to describe the ethical considerations regarding training others to use trial-based FA.

2. Participants will be able to discuss the strengths and limitations of trial-based FA.

3. Participants will be able to use a data analysis approach based on signal detection theory as applied to trial-based FA.

Sarah E. Bloom, Ph.D., BCBA-D earned her Masters and PhD with Dr. Brian Iwata at the University of Florida in 2008. She is an Assistant Professor in the Applied Behavior Analysis program in the Department of Child and Family Studies at the University of South Florida (USF) and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (Doctoral). She supervises a research lab of Master’s and Doctoral students. Her current courses include: Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, Ethics for Behavior Analysts, Conceptual Foundations of Behavior Analysis, and Functional Analysis and Function-Based Approaches to Intervention. Prior to this position, she was a faculty member at Utah State University. She is a former President of the Utah Association for Behavior Analysis and has served on the editorial board for the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. She is a guest reviewer at Behavior Analysis in Practice, Behavioral Interventions, The Behavior Analyst, Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Research in Developmental Disabilities, Journal of Behavioral Education, Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, Education and Treatment of Children, and Journal of Early Intervention. She has 20 articles published or in press in peer-reviewed journals, including a number of articles on trial-based functional analysis. Her current research interests include assessment and treatment of problem behavior and improving access to behavior analysis for culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Dr. Bloom has been involved in the modification of functional analysis methodology into a trial-based format in order to facilitate its use in educational and other settings.
