PART I

While the field of applied behavior analysis has grown substantially in the past 20 years, the vast majority of applied opportunities have been with learners with autism and other developmental disabilities to teach skills and address challenging behavior or to address challenging behavior in individuals who are not on the autism spectrum in general and special education settings. Recently, a growing number of behavior analysts focus their practice on addressing inadequate physical activity and nutrition in individuals in the general population increases the likelihood for disease, physical discomfort, and early mortality.

Nicolas Green, behavior analyst and owner of BehaviorFit, will briefly describe the risks associated with sedentary behavior (both at home and in the office as well as those) and the ongoing consumption of non-nutritive food and beverages and provide an overview of interventions rooted in behavior science used to address those issues. During the event, he will use three case studies to answer the following:

  • What behavior is chosen for intervention and why?
  • Once behavior is chosen for intervention, what happens?
  • Barriers to progress.
  • Benefits and risks to telehealth vs. face-to-face model.
  • Scope of practice concerns.

Learning Objectives:
1. Attendees will be able to describe the risks associated with sedentary behavior
2. Attendees will be able to describe how individual knowledge affects the scope of practice related to health and fitness
3. Attendees will be able to describe how feedback and goal-setting is used in a telehealth model
4. Attendees will be able to select an intervention potentially effective for physical inactivity

PART II

An abundance of health literature indicates that children and adults need to target diet and exercise behaviors.  However, practicing behavior analysts often shy away from addressing health related issues, despite knowledge of behavioral technologies and access to a growing body of research that could lead to socially significant and meaningful outcomes. Many analysts cite ethical considerations and caregiver endrosement as a barrier when addressing behaviors related to increased physical activity and varied food consumption.

As practitioners, we need to confront the use of potentially harmful backup reinforcers which may include long bouts of sedentary activity and excessive use of edibles. This presentation addresses how behavior analysts can alter health-related goals by drawing from current recommendations, selecting and pairing relevant health behaviors, translating current research and gaining support from parents and stakeholders. Common assessment tools (e.g., VB-MAPP, EFL) will be used to illustrate how behavior analysts can write goals within their own boundaries of competence.

  1. Identify common sources for health related recommendations, and potential related professionals for collaboration on health related targets.
  2.  List potential questions for assessing health related needs with caregivers.
  3. Identify potential goal area based off desired outcome identified by parent or other professional.
  4. Identify potential goal area based off a known behavioral assessment tools.
  5. Describe rationale and social significance for submitting goals to funding sources.
  6. Implement existing behavioral technology related to a health target
  7. List ethical guidelines to consider related to scope of practice and goal development.

Nick Green is a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA) and focuses on improving the health and fitness of others through practice and research.

His formal education includes:

* B.A. Psychology (Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, 2006)
* Minor: Philosophy
* M.S. Organizational Behavior Management (Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, FL, 2015).
* Currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Florida, Department of Psychology; Concentration: Behavior Analysis

Nick’s previous experience includes 5 years of clinical work with individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities, working within organizations to evaluate and improve processes, managing and overseeing the training of small teams. His experience and education bring a unique perspective when designing pro-health solutions. Nick’s main focus and research interest in reducing sedentary behavior (too much sitting) in the workplace. His passion is to “improve human performance and health with behavior analysis”. When Nick is not in a book or writing, he enjoys raising his son Ogden, training his dog Pete, improving productivity, Olympic weightlifting, and CrossFit.

Gina Nicolini is Board Certified Behavior Analyst and has developed a passion for the treatment of health-related behavior in children, including programming appropriate levels of physical activity. Since 2000, she has worked in disability services and has instructed in a wide range of settings. Gina experienced in residential facilities, group homes, schools, clinics, and nursing homes that well-developed programs often fail to teach and develop skills that meet this basic human need. Gina’s clinical expertise lies with assessing and developing goals through the use of VB-MAPP, Essential for Living, and AFFLS. She program’s Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior into via natural environment training and verbal modules. Gina is a Professional Crisis Management Instructor, further spurring her interest in client and staff fitness. She believes that the overall health and fitness off direct care staff is important for the safety and well-being of clients.

Assessment:

In addition, participants are required to pass a post-test with 80% accuracy.

Other:

The moderator will present a visual model of how to access the post-test, evaluation, and code-submission form at the end of the webinar.

Each of these are formatted as online forms and are available after the live event and for the duration of the recording access period.
