There is a pressing need to close the chasm between demonstrated efficacy of interventions for youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) validated under ideal conditions and their effectiveness when implemented in community settings. With over a dozen published research studies, The Research Unit on Behavioral Interventions (RUBI) Autism Network Parent Training Program has been found to be acceptable to parents, reliably delivered by trained therapists, and effective in reducing disruptive behavior when evaluated under ideal conditions (i.e. efficacy trials). RUBI is emerging as an important component of short-term, effective treatment for children with ASD and has been expanding reach into “real-word” clinical practice. This workshop focuses on considerations and intervention modifications required to successfully transition RUBI, as studied in a clinical trial, into a viable service for community practitioners.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast research versus clinical implementation of RUBI
  • Identify exemplars of implementation of RUBI in a clinical setting
  • Select standardized assessment procedures that allow for patient characterization and outcomes assessment of RUBI in a clinical setting
  • Identify viable approaches to practice-related implementation considerations (e.g., billing, room lay out, incorporation of the child in session).
  • Select methods to incorporate trainees into a RUBI clinic model

This webinar is available for continuing education for the following professions. Please note only Behavior analysts and psychologists may view the recording for continuing education credit. Karen Bearss is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. She earned her B.S. in Psychology as well as her M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Florida. Prior to joining the UW community, she served as an Associate Research Scientist at the School of Nursing and Child Study Center at Yale University and Assistant Professor at Emory University where her work focused on parenting interventions for children with disruptive behaviors, as well as the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based treatments into community mental health centers. At UW, her research continues to focus on developing, evaluating and implementing evidence-based parenting interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Dr. Bearss also directs the RUBI Clinic at the Seattle Children’s Autism Center.

Participants are required to attend the entire webinar.  ABAC presenters embed codes randomly within their webinar. These are not hidden. The codes are read out loud and left on the screen for about 20s. The codes are not case sensitive. You must write them down or other wise record them as participants must submit the codes via our attendance code submission form following the webinar to ensure attendance.

Assessment:

In addition, participants are required to pass a post-test with 80% accuracy.

Other:

The moderator will present a visual model of how to access the post-test, evaluation, and code-submission form at the end of the webinar.

Each of these are formatted as online forms and are available after the live event and for the duration of the recording access period.
