Healthy, Fit and Happy! A Review of Recent Research on Eating and Exercise 

Presented by: Professor Peter Sturmey, PhD.

Problems of obesity and related health problems are now very common, highly expensive, and cause widespread, preventable disability. Behavior analysis has a unique perspective in understanding these problems as deficits in self-management. This webinar reviews recent evidence for the effectiveness of behavioral self-management approaches to eating and exercise in diverse populations including typically developing children, children with disabilities and overweight adults, using commercial devices such as Fitbit © to increase exercise and packaged programs such as Food Dudes to increase healthy eating. This webinar reviews recent applied behavior analytic research in this area, identifies evidence-based practices and makes recommendations for practitioners.

 

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this event, the participant should be able to describe:

1. Self-management as it applies to eating and exercise;
2. Recent outcomes data on Fitbit on exercise behavior;
3. Recent outcome data on Food Dudes and eating behavior;
4. The limitations of this research and its implications for practice.

Professor Peter Sturmey is Professor of Psychology at The Graduate Center and the Department of Psychology, Queens College, City University of New York where he is a member of the Behavior Analysis Doctoral and Masters in Applied Behavior Analysis programs. He specialized in autism and other developmental disabilities, especially in the areas of applied behavior analysis, dual diagnosis, evidence-based practice, and staff and parent training. He is the resident speaker at ABAC and Chief Scientific Officer at Long Island ABA. He gained his PhD at the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom and subsequently taught at the University of the South West (Plymouth) and University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. He then worked for the Texas Department of Mental Retardation from 1990-2000 as Chief Psychologist, first at Abilene then San Antonio State Schools during a Federal class action law. There he supervised behavioral services and Masters level psychologists providing behavior support plans for severe behavioral and psychiatric disorders in adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities and implementing large-scale active treatment and restraint reduction programs. Professor Sturmey has published 25 edited and authored books, over 210 peer reviewed papers, over 60 book chapters. He provides webinars on ABA to qualified professionals and others on a regular basis. He has made numerous presentations nationally and internationally, including recent presentations in Canada, Brazil, Belgium, Luxemburg and Italy. He has an active lab of graduate and undergraduate students working on developing and evaluating effective and efficient ways of training caregivers using modeling and feedback to use applied behavior analysis with children and adults with autism and other disabilities. He provides training and consultations widely.

Participants are required to attend the entire webinar.  ABAC presenters embed codes randomly within their webinar. These are not hidden. The codes are read out loud and left on the screen for about 20s. The codes are not case sensitive. You must write them down or other wise record them as participants must submit the codes via our attendance code submission form following the webinar to ensure attendance.

Assessment:

In addition, participants are required to pass a post-test with 80% accuracy.

Other:

The moderator will present a visual model of how to access the post-test, evaluation, and code-submission form at the end of the webinar.

Each of these are formatted as online forms and are available after the live event and for the duration of the recording access period.

Cancellation policy-

If you are unable to attend a webinar, please email Adrienne at adrienne@abacnj.com as soon as you can. We will not accept cancellations within 1 hour of the webinar start time.  If your cancellation is received prior to 1 hour before the event, we are happy to move you into another webinar or issue a refund. Please check make sure you know how long the webinar recording is available for. Most events are recorded and access is granted for up to 5 days. We will no longer offer transfers to other classes if you miss the webinar.

In the rare event ABAC must cancel a webinar due to low enrollment or presenter conflict, an email will be sent to all individuals who have already signed up arranging an transfer to another webinar or a refund.
