Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most frequent diagnoses among school age populations (estimated by the CDC as affecting 11% of children in the U.S.), and has been correlated with an array of concerning educational, social, and health outcomes. This webinar will explore empirically validated interventions that link to a functional conceptualization of the characteristics of ADHD. The webinar will first provide an overview of characteristics of ADHD and contrast functional and traditional, structural approaches to conceptualization and assessment. Traditional, structural approaches, as used by the DSM-V, diagnose ADHD based on a description of various symptoms, or what an individual’s behavior looks like (e.g., a lack of persistence). A functional approach describes ADHD objectively according to the relation of behaviors to certain environmental events or outcomes (e.g., delays to reinforcement). Participants will learn how a functional approach can contribute to assessment of ADHD, to evaluation of treatment effects (including of medication), and to the development of effective interventions. Examples will be presented of how a functional approach links to practical strategies from the research literature that have demonstrated effectiveness in attenuating defining characteristics of ADHD.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this event attendees should be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast structural versus functional accounts of ADHD.
  2. Explain each of the defining characteristics of ADHD from a functional/behavioral perspective.
  3. Give examples of practical strategies that have been shown to be effective in attenuating each of the defining characteristics of ADHD, and the conceptual basis for their effects.

Dr. Nancy Neef is Professor Emeritus in the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University. Her distinguished research career in the area of developmental disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has substantially impacted research and practice in the field. Her research illustrates both key principles of behavior (e.g., matching law) and a wide array of applications (e.g., to children with behavioral and learning problems). This work has resulted in more than 80 publications and numerous national and international presentations. Dr. Neef’s own scholarly contributions have been matched by her support of the research of others throughout her career, including as editor of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and as an associate editor or member of the editorial boards of 14 journals. She has received a number of awards, including the American Psychological Association Division 25’s Outstanding Applied Research Award.

Participants are required to attend the entire webinar.  ABAC presenters embed codes randomly within their webinar. These are not hidden. The codes are read out loud and left on the screen for about 20s. The codes are not case sensitive. You must write them down or other wise record them as participants must submit the codes via our attendance code submission form following the webinar to ensure attendance.


In addition, participants are required to pass a post-test with 80% accuracy.


The moderator will present a visual model of how to access the post-test, evaluation, and code-submission form at the end of the webinar.

Each of these are formatted as online forms and are available after the live event and for the duration of the recording access period.

Cancellation policy-

If you are unable to attend a webinar, please email Adrienne at adrienne@abacnj.com as soon as you can. We will not accept cancellations within 1 hour of the webinar start time.  If your cancellation is received prior to 1 hour before the event, we are happy to move you into another webinar or issue a refund. Please check make sure you know how long the webinar recording is available for. Most events are recorded and access is granted for up to 5 days. We will no longer offer transfers to other classes if you miss the webinar.

In the rare event ABAC must cancel a webinar due to low enrollment or presenter conflict, an email will be sent to all individuals who have already signed up arranging an transfer to another webinar or a refund.
