Abstract:

Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) has been shown to be an effective treatment strategy for a range of populations, including individuals with autism. Recent behavior analytic attention has been paid to ACT, as evidenced by a recent surge of behavior analytic training/workshops, curriculum materials and protocols, research publications, etc. While promising, limited information is currently available for practitioners to assess their integrity with implementing ACT with their clients. Similarly, behavior analysts have minimal resources to consider ethical conduct when implementing behavioral therapies in general, and ACT specifically. Therefore, the current panel will discuss relevant scope of practice for behavior analysts when implementing ACT in their practice. The goal of the panel is to provide attendees with insight into specific areas, to ensure ethical and quality implementation of ACT. The following topics will be discussed: implementation strategies, ethical considerations, and strategies for targeting private events. All three panelists have published empirical studies using acceptance and commitment training and relational frame theory (RFT), and are board certified behavior analyst-doctoral.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this webinar, participants should be able to:

1. Label key ethical codes that pertain to using ACT in clinical practice
2. Identify strategies for targeting private events
3. Define how to assess integrity of ACT implementation

Chair and Panelist Bios:

Dana Paliliunas, Ph.D., BCBA is a professor at Missouri State University. Following several years as special education teacher and behavior interventionist in the Chicagoland area, Dana completed her doctoral studies in Behavior Analysis and Therapy at Southern Illinois University.  Her primary research interests include language processes and psychological distress, applications of behavior therapies in educational settings, mechanisms of therapeutic change, and Acceptance and Commitment Training. Dana is co-author of AIM: A Behavior Analytic Curriculum for Social-Emotional Development in Children, an intervention program designed to synthesize Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Applied Behavior Analysis in order to promote prosocial behavior among children and adolescents.

Dr. Jonathan Tarbox is the Program Director of the Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis program at the University of Southern California, as well as Director of Research at FirstSteps for Kids. Dr. Tarbox is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Behavior Analysis in Practice and serves on the editorial boards of several major scientific journals related to autism and behavior analysis. He has published four books on autism treatment, is the Series Editor of the Elsevier book series Critical Specialties in Treating Autism and Other Behavioral Challenges, and an author of well over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters in scientific texts. His research focuses on behavioral interventions for teaching complex skills to individuals with autism and applications of Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) to applied behavior analysis.

Dr. Adam D. Hahs is Director of the MS ABA Program in the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University and is the Past-President of the Arizona Association for Behavior Analysis (AZABA). He earned a PhD from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale where his research foci were language generativity, complex human behavior, and clinical behavior analysis with individuals with autism, traumatic brain injuries, and addiction. Dr. Hahs teaches courses in advanced language and advanced research methodology. He also works with numerous schools and clinics across Arizona in an effort to disseminate highly effective behavior-analytic practices. His current research interests include language generativity, the PEAK Relational Training System, Relational Frame Theory, and Acceptance and Commitment Training. Dr. Hahs has dedicated over 10 years to supporting and training others in a variety of settings via behavior analytic methods, and he views behavior analysis as science capable of facilitating widespread, societal change.

Dr. Alyssa Wilson is Associate Professor and Director of the Applied Behavior Analysis program in the School of Social Work at Saint Louis University. She received her Ph.D. and M.S. in Rehabilitation and Behavior Analysis and Therapy respectively from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral, a Licensed Behavior Analyst in Missouri, and has provided clinical behavior analysis to children and adults with behavioral addictions, intellectual disabilities, and emotional dysregulation for over 10 years. Dr. Wilson has published peer reviewed articles and book chapters on the assessment and treatment of behavioral addictions, classroom behavior management, skill acquisition, and clinical behavioral social work practice. She currently serves as an editorial board member for Behavior Analysis in Practice; Behavior Analysis: Research and Practice; and Journal of Contextual Behavior Science.

Participants are required to attend the entire webinar.  ABAC presenters embed codes randomly within their webinar. These are not hidden. The codes are read out loud and left on the screen for about 20s. The codes are not case sensitive. You must write them down or other wise record them as participants must submit the codes via our attendance code submission form following the webinar to ensure attendance.

Assessment:

In addition, participants are required to pass a post-test with 80% accuracy.

Other:

The moderator will present a visual model of how to access the post-test, evaluation, and code-submission form at the end of the webinar.

Each of these are formatted as online forms and are available after the live event and for the duration of the recording access period.
